A Russian Federation SU-30 aircraft and an IL-78 refueling aircraft, possibly conducting refueling exercises in the Kaliningrad region, flew into Lithuanian territory for about 700 meters and left after staying in Lithuanian airspace for about 18 seconds.

In response to the incident, two Spanish Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, which are carrying out a NATO air policing mission, were deployed to the scene of the incident and are currently conducting air patrols over the incident area.

After Russian fighter jets violated Lithuanian airspace, President Gitanas Nausėda condemned such actions and said that this is a gross violation of international law. According to the head of state, Lithuania cannot fail to react to this situation.

"We condemn Russia's actions and the incursion of military aircraft into our airspace. We see that these incidents have been increasing recently - not only in Lithuania. Without a doubt, this is a gross violation of international law and our space."

"We cannot fail to react, and at the same time, this very well reflects the importance of the issues that we are discussing today in the European Council format, and the decisions that we intend to make are certainly aimed at strengthening Lithuania's air defense," G. Nausėda said in a statement.

According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) should summon representatives of the Russian mission in the near future and deliver a note of protest.

After two Russian military aircraft briefly violated Lithuanian airspace on Thursday, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė assures that the situation is completely under control.

"Today, an incident was recorded when Russian military aircraft briefly violated Lithuanian airspace - they stayed there for less than 20 seconds. I want to assure you: the situation is completely under control," writes I. Ruginienė on her Facebook account.

"Our services acted with precision - two Spanish Air Force fighter jets carrying out a NATO air policing mission took to the air, flew to the site of the violation and are currently continuing their patrol. This is another example of the successful and coordinated work of our services," she emphasizes.

I. Ruginienė emphasizes that by violating Lithuanian airspace, Russia is acting like a terrorist state.

"This incident once again shows that Russia is behaving like a terrorist state, disregarding international law and the security of neighboring countries. However, such actions will not affect us - Lithuania remains strong, united and ready to defend itself," she says.

The Prime Minister emphasizes her gratitude to both the country's services and the allies who ensure the security of Lithuania's borders.

"I thank our services, allies and everyone who protects the country's borders every day. Such cases remind us of how important our commitments to defense and constant preparedness for any situation are," says I. Ruginienė.

"Lithuania is safe. Together with our allies, we will protect and defend every centimeter of our country," she assures.
