In the battle for fourth place in Group A, Portugal defeated Estonia with a score of 68:65 (14:14, 18:13, 13:20, 20:21) and reached the round of 16.
This is a great success for Portugal. The last time the Portuguese played in the European Championship was in 2011, when they did not win and finished the tournament in 21st place.
In 2007, Portugal finished ninth in the European Championship, sensationally defeating Latvia in the group stage.
In the middle of the third quarter, the Portuguese were left without their leader, Nemijas Keta, who was ejected from the game after a second technical foul (the score at that time was 38:37 in favor of the Portuguese).
Despite this, the Portuguese led for a long time, until Arturs Konotšuks made a couple of accurate shots in the second half of the fourth quarter to make it 64:61.
Rafael Lisboa was also flawless from the perimeter, and a minute before the end of regulation time the score was tied at 64:64. 42 seconds before the final whistle, Konotsuk made one of two free throws, but 20 seconds later Lisboa responded with two flawless"penalties" - 66:65 in favor of Portugal.
The Estonian basketball players missed a shot on the ensuing attack, the Portuguese got the rebound, and four seconds before the end of regulation, the rules were violated. Lisboa added two more accurate free throws, while Christian Kullame failed to tie the game with a long-range shot.
Kontsuks led the Estonian team with 20 points, while Kullame had 17 points, six assists and four rebounds. Lisboa had 17 points and five assists for Portugal, while Ket had 15 points.
At 6 p.m. Latvia will meet the Czech Republic, and at 9:15 p.m. - Turkey will meet Serbia.
In Group A, before the final two games, Turkey and Serbia have four wins each, Latvia and Portugal have two wins each, Estonia has one win, but the Czech Republic has lost all four duels.
The European Championship final tournament will feature 24 teams in four groups in late August and early September in Riga, Tampere, Katowice and Limassol. The top four teams from each group will qualify for the play-off tournament in Riga, with the medal winners to be determined in the first half of September. The round of 16 will feature teams from Groups A and B, as well as Groups C and D.
