The man suspected of murdering Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody, Donald Trump announced, according to CNN.
I can say with a fair amount of certainty that we have taken the man into custody
Trump said.
The president also said that the suspect was turned over to authorities by a close relative and then spoke about his belief that he would be found guilty and sentenced to death. Trump based this on the fact that Utah Governor Spencer Cox had already indicated to him that the perpetrator could face the death penalty. “Utah has the death penalty and the state has a very good governor,” Trump said of Republican Cox.
Trump said that the close relative who turned the suspect in was involved in law enforcement, but also a man of God, a pastor. The president also said that the suspect was his father.
CNN's own sources also confirmed the arrest, saying the man is already being questioned.
As previously reported, Kirk was shot by a sniper while giving a speech at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The conservative influencer died from his injuries a short time later.
Donald Trump commented on Kirk's death by condemning far-left political violence, and following in his footsteps, Máté Kocsis also tried to link Péter Magyar to the case. Viktor Orbán also said that the liberal left was behind Kirk's murder, although this somewhat contradicts Trump's explanation of the far-left.
At the same time, American authorities also began investigating. First, they released a photo of the suspect and then managed to find the suspected murder weapon, which was a high-powered Mauser-type rifle.
Charlie Kirk was one of the most talented and committed right-wing political influencers who could reach out to young Americans, and one could even say that he was one of the most popular figures in the MAGA camp, if only by looking at his social media following. His success was due to his willingness to engage in open debate, which eventually became his business.
However, Kirk has often been in the crossfire of the media for his not-so-PC statements. For example, his statement that he would think twice about getting on a plane piloted by a black man caused a huge stir, because he might have been in the cockpit only because of positive discrimination and not because he was sufficiently qualified for it. He also didn't win many people over when he said that couples should have children by the age of 30 (he set an example by raising two children with his wife), and that women over 30 are no longer very dateable.
Kirk was a staunch supporter of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and often argued that the few unfortunate deaths each year that gun violence exacts are a reasonable price to pay for its preservation.
