Before boarding Air Force One, Trump commented on the war in Ukraine and laid out a specific, though unconfirmed, timeline for a possible peace summit.
When asked by journalists about the conditions of the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he could attend, Trump confidently answered:"It will happen, and in two or three months."
The statement comes as his administration is focused on a diplomatic solution to the conflict and follows recent threats of secondary sanctions against Russia if a peace deal is not reached by a given deadline. Trump recently expressed frustration over Russia's continued attacks on Ukrainian cities despite US efforts to broker a ceasefire. This week, his administration announced additional arms sales to Ukraine and a new arms financing model supported by the European Union.
The US is strengthening NATO's eastern flank with $4 billion for Poland
At the same time, the State Department today announced another important move – a loan guarantee of $4 billion Poland under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program. The FMF program is designed to strengthen US national security by allowing key allies like Poland to invest in American-made defense systems.
Poland, which the US considers one of its strongest allies in Europe, has significantly increased its defense investments since 2023. This includes the acquisition of advanced US systems such as Apache helicopters, radar systems, HIMARS missile systems and Patriot missile defense systems.
US officials emphasized that these agreements promote"peace through strength" and ensure that allies can defend themselves with "reliable, proven systems built by the best defense industry in the world."
The Minister of Defense reassures the Baltic allies
US Defense Minister Pete Hegsett hosted defense ministers from the Baltic countries today at the Pentagon. During the meeting, he directly quoted Trump, stressing that the US"remains fully committed to NATO".
Hegseth highlighted common goals with the Baltic states, saying:"Together we are achieving peace through strength in Europe, creating the conditions for lasting peace in Ukraine, establishing sustainable deterrence, and increasing the capabilities and interoperability of allies."
