On Thursday in Rabat, during a joint press conference with the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, Nasser Bourita strongly denounced Israeli calls for Palestinians in Gaza to move to a so-called humanitarian zone in the south of the enclave. He condemned provocative statements and unacceptable violations, which he said endanger the entire region.

The head of Moroccan diplomacy stressed that the Israeli army appears to want to expand its military operations in the Gaza Strip, already hit by famine, in order to ensure control over it. This is not only a violation of international law and humanitarian law, or an attack on the foundations of stability, he declared, but a direct threat to the security of neighboring countries.

Faced with this situation, Nasser Bourita announced that Morocco had declared itself in favor of convening an extraordinary Arab summit and another Islamic summit, in order to coordinate regional positions. He also insisted on the need to evaluate recent Israeli statements in the light of international efforts made for decades in favor of the two-state solution, which some are now trying to completely compromise.

The minister also denounced the abuses committed in Al-Quds, including incursions and threats targeting holy sites. These actions are particularly dangerous because they transform a political issue into a religious conflict, he warned. Damaging the symbolism of Jerusalem, the city of coexistence par excellence, is tantamount to inciting hatred and extremism, with unpredictable consequences.

Referring to the human tragedies caused by Israeli operations, Nasser Bourita condemned acts of famine, attacks against journalists and against innocent and defenseless civilians, crimes which, according to him, challenge human conscience and call into question respect for international law. He also recalled that, on the instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco had expressed its solidarity with Qatar in the face of repeated attacks on its sovereignty and the peace of its people.

Reaffirming the Kingdom's consistent position, Nasser Bourita insisted: The two-state solution remains the only possible way to resolve the Palestinian question, through the establishment of an independent state on the June 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital.

For her part, European Commissioner Dubravka Šuica echoed this sentiment, while acknowledging the lack of consensus among the 27 member states. Without a Palestinian state, there can be no stability in the region, she said. She clarified that her position was in line with the European Commission, recalling the statement by its President Ursula von der Leyen. We remain firmly convinced that the two-state solution is the only possible way to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, she concluded.
