"Attention! Heavy rainfall and storms are forecast for July 27-28. Flooding is possible. Do not approach swollen rivers. Follow the instructions of the services" - a message with this content was sent by the Government Security Centre on Saturday to residents of 12 voivodeships : Pomerania, Lesser Poland, Łódź, Warmian-Masurian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Opole, Silesia, Lower Silesia, Mazovia, Świętokrzyskie and Podlaskie.

The alert also covered some counties of the Greater Poland Voivodeship : Gniezno, Jarocin, Kalisz, Kalisz, Kępno, Koło, Konin, Konin, Krotoszyn, Ostrów, Ostrzeszów, Pleszew, Słupca, Środa, Turek and Września.

Genoese low over Poland. The front will bring heavy rains.

As the institute explained, from Sunday Poland will be within the range of a low pressure bay associated with a low pressure system whose main center will move from the Mediterranean region to the Balkan Peninsula.

"At the same time, a secondary low-pressure center will form over Hungary. A wavy atmospheric front will be associated with these low-pressure centers, which will approach Poland from the south, gradually moving north and west. This will be accompanied by an inflow of a relatively warm, polar-maritime air mass and a drop in atmospheric pressure. Storms and heavy rainfall are forecasted," the forecast states.

Weather in Poland. Supercell storms forecast. IMWM warns

The forecast indicates that the greatest threat from severe meteorological phenomena will cover the south, center, and east of Poland, where forecast rainfall totals may locally reach approximately 150 mm between Sunday and Monday.

In turn, in the morning hours, a zone of precipitation associated with a low pressure system will move into the southern voivodeships (Silesia, Lesser Poland). Storms may develop from the morning, but their greatest activity is forecast for the afternoon hours.

"Thunderstorms will occur both in the form of isolated cells and more organized structures, including potentially supercell thunderstorms. Thunderstorms may also be embedded in stratiform cloud cover, which will locally increase rainfall totals," the release reads.

On the night from Sunday to Monday, local rainfall totals may reach 50 mm. "The occurrence of hail with a diameter of up to 2-3 cm cannot be ruled out, especially in the case of the development of supercells. Within 30 hours, totals exceeding 130 mm are possible locally" - warns IMWM.

As the low pressure system moves north, the zone of most intense precipitation will also move in that direction. On Monday, precipitation will be concentrated in the central belt and northern parts of the country.
