Venezuelan Government Response and Rhetoric

The tension between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro, seems to be getting stronger and stronger.

Although, this Friday, September 5, Trump said in a press conference at the White House that anti-drug surveillance operations in the Caribbean are oriented towards drug trafficking groups that send large quantities of drugs to North America, especially those from Venezuela such as the Tren de Aragua or the Cartel of the Suns, everything seems to indicate that there could be another plan directed, specifically, at the Nicolás Maduro regime.

This was revealed this Saturday, September 6, by the international media outlet CNN in one of its articles. It claims that Trump would be considering carrying out attacks inside Venezuela, with the aim of weakening the regime.

“President Donald Trump is considering various options to carry out military attacks against drug cartels operating in Venezuela, including the possibility of attacking targets inside the country as part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening leader Nicolás Maduro, according to multiple sources informed about the Government’s plans,” specifically indicates CNN.

In fact, he points out that the U.S. attack on a Venezuelan vessel on Tuesday, which was apparently transporting drugs and left 11 dead, was just the beginning of something bigger to come.

“Tuesday’s deadly attack on a suspected drug ship leaving Venezuela was a direct reflection of those choices, the sources said, and marked a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s crackdown on drug cartels, many of which have been designated terrorist groups. Several sources told CNN that Tuesday’s attack was just the beginning of a much larger effort to root out drug trafficking in the region and potentially remove Maduro from power,” the CNN article added.

However, it is important to remember that at the press conference this Friday, September 5, when a journalist asked President Trump if he would like to see regime change in Venezuela, he replied: “We are not talking about that.”

"But we're talking about the fact that (Venezuela) had an election that was very strange, to say the least," Trump added, referring to last year's presidential race in Venezuela, which was marred by electoral fraud at the hands of Maduro.

He also accused Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, of trying to force President Trump into a war in the Caribbean that would damage his reputation.
