MILLİYET.COM.TR / The Israeli army carried out an attack on a senior Hamas negotiating team in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday.
In the operation dubbed"Doomsday," a delegation of prominent Hamas figures such as Khalil al-Hayya, Khalid Meshal, Zaher Jabbarin, and Musa Abu Marzouk were struck by 10 Israeli Air Force warplanes and drones. The operation was strikingly carried out 1,800 kilometers from Israel.
‘RESPONSIBILITY IS ISRAEL’
In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet said,"A targeted operation was carried out against Hamas's senior leadership. The cabinet was briefed before the attack," while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel bears full responsibility for the attacks.
‘A STEP THAT CONTINUES WAR, NOT PEACE’
The attack was met with immediate international reaction. Many countries, including Turkey, Qatar, the UAE, and Jordan, strongly condemned the attack. Turkey strongly condemned Israel's attack on the Hamas negotiating team in Doha, describing it as a step"aimed at perpetuating war, not peace." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its support for Qatar and called on the international community to halt Israel's aggression.
TARGETED TURKEY
Meanwhile, Israeli academic Dr. Meir Masri's successive posts on the social media platform X further escalated tensions in the region. Masri, who teaches geopolitics and political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and frequently defends Israeli policies in the international press, directly targeted Turkey in his posts in Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew.
‘I AM THE SYMBOL OF TRUST’
According to a report by Maariv, a leading Israeli newspaper, Masri said in his first post:"The attack in Doha was known weeks ago, I announced it. My name is now a symbol of trust in the Arab world."
‘THOSE WHO ATTACK DOHA MAY ALSO ATTACK ANKARA’
He then said, “Qatar is not a mediator, it is Hamas’s accomplice.” The most striking message on social media came in Turkish: “ Whoever attacks Doha can also attack Ankara.” Masri, who used the phrase, set social media ablaze with these words.
‘ADVICE TO ERDOĞAN’
Masri’s threats didn’t stop there. He also shared a post in Turkish directed at President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, saying, “Advice to Erdoğan: Look around you!” He continued, “Today Qatar, tomorrow Turkey” and published a photo of Erdoğan shaking hands with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, whom Israel had previously killed in Iran.
Meanwhile, an Israeli official told Al Arabiya,"We are not afraid of Turkey, but we do not want conflict either. We will strike wherever the threat comes from."
