The Jumilla People's Party (PP) (Murcia, population 27,263) released a statement on Thursday denying that the motion it approved a week ago sought to ban Muslim celebrations of the Feast of the Lamb and other similar events in municipal sports facilities."In no case do words like Muslims, Islamic community, or prohibition appear," states the document, published on Facebook.
Although the text approved by the City Council does not include the words cited by the municipal People's Party (PP), the motion retains the title presented by Vox, which directly alludes to Islam. It reads:"On the defense of the customs and practices of the Spanish people against foreign cultural practices, such as the 'Feast of the Lamb' and the modification of the regulations for the use and operation of municipal sports facilities."
Furthermore, the PP's proposed amendments only include the points of the original motion (which the PP ended up reformulating to fit"within the current legal framework") and do not propose modifying the "statement of reasons" presented by the far-right party, where it justified the ban on Muslim celebrations or urged"the competent authorities to prevent the consolidation of foreign cultural practices that are not part of Spanish tradition."
Furthermore, in justifying the amendment to the Vox motion presented by the PP, the municipal government party states that the text pursues"the legitimate purpose of protecting our traditions and customs" while acknowledging that it "may give rise to interpretations that do not fully comply with the current legal framework."
