Ahead of the summit between US President Trump and Kremlin leader Putin, Western government officials plan to consult with Ukraine today. US Vice President Vance will also participate in the talks in Great Britain.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Vice President JD Vance will meet with Ukrainian and European allies today to discuss US President Donald Trump's plans for Ukraine, a government spokesperson said.
European government officials responsible for security issues are expected to participate in the meeting. The meeting will be a"significant forum" to discuss progress toward a "just and lasting peace" in Ukraine, according to the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It is currently unclear which European countries will be participating. German government sources said they would participate at the advisory level.
Lammy and Vance had previously held bilateral talks in Great Britain. Starmer's office said they welcomed US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the"barbaric war" in Ukraine. They also agreed that"pressure must be maintained on Putin to end his illegal war."
Zelensky warns against decisions without Ukraine
Starmer had previously spoken by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky called for"maximum coordination" between Ukraine and its partners during the conversation. Zelensky stated in an online message that"clear steps" were necessary for Russia to end its war against Ukraine.
"We appreciate the determination of the United Kingdom, the United States, and all our partners to end this war," the Ukrainian leader emphasized. He had previously warned against"decisions without Ukraine."
"Every decision against us, every decision without Ukraine, is also a decision against peace," Zelenskyy declared. Ukrainians would not leave their country"to the occupiers."
Zelenskyy has not been invited to the meeting between Trump and Putin on Friday in the US state of Alaska. Trump had announced the meeting on Friday. The Kremlin confirmed the meeting and invited Trump to visit Russia afterward.
