A third of voters who voted for Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the 2022 elections believe the former president and his family are to blame for the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazilian products. According to a PoderData survey released this Thursday, 31st, 34% of Bolsonaro supporters attribute Donald Trump's tariff hike to Bolsonaro and his sons.
Another 40% of Bolsonaro voters hold President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) responsible for the measures adopted by the Trump administration against Brazil. 26% did not know or did not want to answer.
Among Lula's voters, 55% blame the Bolsonaro family for Trump's tariff hikes, while 26% blame the Workers' Party (PT) for the measures. Another 19% didn't know or declined to answer.
On July 9, the President of the United States announced that Brazilian exports would be taxed at 50%. The White House justified the measures by stating that they were adopted in response to the justice system's treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro , freedom of expression, and American trade.
Trump signed the order on Wednesday the 30th. The executive order, however, included a list of nearly 700 exemptions to the tax.
The former president's son, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), has been in the United States since the beginning of the year, where he says he is actively working with US authorities to pressure the Brazilian government and judiciary regarding the criminal action against his father for attempted coup d'état after the 2022 elections .
On Monday the 28th, two days before the decree was made official, Eduardo said that the Senate delegation that traveled to the US to negotiate the surcharge would not be successful in its endeavor and that he would hinder the process."I'm working to ensure they don't find a dialogue," he said in an interview with SBT News.
The PoderData survey interviewed 2,500 people via telephone between July 26th and 28th. The margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points. The confidence level is 95%.
