Public Opinion on Milei's Vetoes

The opposition approved by more than two-thirds the insistence on the Emergency Disability Law vetoed by Javier Milei. Among the affirmative votes were two deputies from the ruling party: Carlos D'Alessandro from San Luis and journalist Marcela Pagano.

Minutes later, they slammed the door on the La Libertad Avanza bloc to form their own bench alongside the expelled Lourdes Arrieta and Gerardo González from Formosa. All have terms until 2027, although D'Alessandro was elected provincial deputy in San Luis.

The name of the new bloc is"Coherence." "A new bloc committed to a single pact: the coherence of our ideas and the future of the Argentine people," said D'Alessandro.

Within the bloc, they point out that they initially felt betrayed by the LLA's agreement with"the caste," but that what really broke the camel's back had to do with the accusations against the Menems in recent weeks."The limit was corruption. We're not going to remain tied to the Menems," said a voice from the new bloc.

Thus, the ruling bloc of 39 members was reduced to 36.

Carlos D'Alessandro was absent from the first vote on the Disability Emergency Law. Today, he surprised everyone by providing a quorum for the session and voting against Milei's veto. The San Luis native is the head of LLA in San Luis and the main provincial shipowner.

He's angry with the leaders of the National Party—Karina Milei and Martín Menem—who put together a list with a former minister of current Governor Claudio Poggi, and accuses them of forging a deal. He challenged this arrangement, and they ended up intervening in his party.

Libertarian Marcela Pagano - who is at war with Martín Menem and most of her fellow party members - was also absent from the vote the first time around. Today she voted in favor.

González, for his part, was also a member of the LLA caucus. He is from Formosa and maintains a low profile in the chamber. He was absent from the vote on the disability issue.

Lourdes Arrieta had been expelled from the party after attacking Martín Menem following the scandal surrounding the delegation of deputies who visited repressors detained in the Ezeiza prison. She claimed he was aware of it and launched a torrent of accusations against the Riojan.

Vote swings

The Libertarians weren't the only ones to change their votes. The effects of the list closure resonated throughout the chamber. On the one hand, those"wounded" by the list closures, angry with the ruling party, chose revenge. Others, on the other hand, freed from commitments, now voted as autonomous regions. Meanwhile, federal allies who maintain good relations with the Executive branch are now distancing themselves because they will face rivals in their provinces.

The insistence was approved by 172 votes in favor, 73 against and there were 2 abstentions, both from PRO : María Eugenia Vidal and Gabriela Besana, who the first time had voted against the project.

The opposition ended up with 24 more votes in favor than when it first voted on the bill. The number of absentees, which had been 34 in June, dropped to 10, and there were many vote shifts; La Libertad Avanza lost allies in the run-up to the campaign, although it also gained a couple.

In the PRO

PRO's Larretista Alvaro Gonzalez, absent the other time, voted in favor of the law. And Chubut native Ana Clara Romero (PRO), who voted against the initiative in the first vote, reversed her position and voted in favor.

As mentioned above, Vidal and Besana also changed their votes against to abstention.

In Union for the Homeland

Catamarcan Union for the Homeland party, Fernanda Avila (who answers to the Peronist governor who acted as Milei's ally, Raúl Jalil) was absent from the original vote. She now voted in favor of enabling the treatment.

UP member from Santiago de Cuba Celia Campitelli, who answers to Peronist Governor Gerardo Zamora, had initially been absent but today she was also in favor.

At the UCR

The Mendoza radicals of Alfredo Cornejo, Pamela Verasay and Lisandro Nieri, who voted in favor of the Disability Emergency in June, now—who are electoral allies of the Libertarians—voted against it.

Federal Innovation

In June, only two representatives from the Federal Innovation Party had voted in favor: Pamela Caletti, the Salta representatives who answer to Gustavo Sáenz, and Yolanda Vega. Their six remaining colleagues—who answer to Carlos Rovira, from Misiones, and Alberto Weretilneck, from Río Negro—were absent. This time, all eight voted in favor.

At the Federal Meeting

In Entre Ríos, Francisco Morchio, who answers to Governor Rogelio Frigerio, abstained the first time but now opposes the bill. On the other hand, Alejandra Torres from Córdoba, who had also abstained, leaned in favor of the law. The same was done by Jorge Avila from Chubut, an ally of Governor Ignacio Torres (PRO), who went from absent to in favor.

Democracy Forever

The bloc had three absences: Corrientes native Manuel Ignacio Aguirre (who answers to Radical Governor Gustavo Valdes), Pampa native Marcela Coli, and Chaco native Juan Carlos Polini (who answers to Leandro Zdero). This time, except for Aguirre, the others were present and voted in favor.

Other twists

López Muprhy had been absent, but now he's present and has voted in favor. The Radical Party member, who has a Santa Fe-based coalition, Atilio Benedetti, and is close to Governor Rogelio Frigerio (PRO), went from voting in favor to being absent.

Oscar Zago's MID bloc of three had two absentees and one dissenting vote. Now, in an unexpected twist, they voted like this: Marcela Ibáñez from Córdoba opposed, and Zago and Eduardo Falcone supported.
