The Chamber of Deputies rejected Javier Milei's veto of the university funding law on Wednesday, and it passed to the Senate for consideration. There were 174 votes in favor of the bill approved by Congress, 67 in support of the President's decision, and two abstentions.
The vote in the lower house occurred amid a new federal university march outside Congress. Inside the chamber, the debate on the veto of the university law coincided with that of another law vetoed by Milei, the so-called Garrahan Law, which declares a pediatric emergency.
The university funding law had received preliminary approval in the House of Representatives on August 7, with 158 votes in favor, 75 against, and 5 abstentions. Two weeks later, the Senate approved the bill with 58 votes in favor, 10 against, and 3 abstentions.
The initiative aims to update the budget in relation to the accumulated inflation of the last two years and also proposes calling for collective bargaining agreements to restore the purchasing power of university workers.
