As part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Green March, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art celebrates this immortal national event through a documentary art exhibition entitled “50 Years of the Green March: A Living Memory”, which highlights the power of the artistic vision and its role in preserving national memory and promoting the values of peace and unity.

The exhibition, organized by the National Foundation of Museums in partnership with Moroccan photographer and director Daoud Aoulad-Syad and the Marrakech photography galleries, combines photographs documenting moments from the Green March with artworks that express the deep connection between memory, culture and Moroccan identity.

In a statement to Hespress, Mehdi Qotbi, President of the National Foundation of Museums in Morocco, said that “the Security Council resolution on the Moroccan Sahara is the fruit of bold and decisive diplomacy led wisely by His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” adding that “His Majesty has elevated Moroccan diplomacy to the level of a model in settling conflicts through peaceful means.”

Qutbi continued: “Today we are continuing this approach, by celebrating the Green March through art, so that museums are in complete harmony with the conscience and vitality of the Moroccan people.”

For her part, Nadia Sabri, director of the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, said that “this photographic exhibition includes distinctive photographic displays, and presents a collection of photographs that documented historical moments from the Green March period.”

Sabri added, in a statement to Hespress, that the exhibition “aims to highlight the historical dimension and national inspiration of that period, and also presents pictures that carry artistic and symbolic connotations, and others that express the desert space, its charm and beauty.” She continued: “One of the distinctive features of this exhibition is that all its pictures were taken in black and white, which gives it a sophisticated artistic character and a special aesthetic that we know in the art of classical photography.”

The spokesperson emphasized that the exhibition “comes in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Green March, with a clear desire to document and preserve the visual memory of that glorious historical era,” adding that “the points that can really be emphasized are that this exhibition simultaneously presents a valuable visual and historical archive, allowing the public of all categories – whether young or old who may have lived through this historical event but do not necessarily remember its prominent moments – the opportunity to rediscover those moments through the documentary photographs on display.”

For his part, Idrissi Abdelaziz, head of the museums department at the National Museums Foundation, said that “the National Museums Foundation, like other national institutions, is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the triumphant Green March through a documentary and artistic program that highlights this prominent historical event.”

Idrissi added, in a statement to Hespress, that “the museum is displaying on this occasion documentary photographic works by artists who immortalized the march, in addition to creations by other artists who addressed the subject of the Sahara through scenes they captured with their lenses deep in the desert space.”

The same spokesperson added that “the exhibition aims to blend the historical and contemporary dimensions, presenting an artistic vision that brings younger generations closer to this timeless national event, as part of commemorating fifty years of national unity and progress.”
