Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Hamas negotiators in Cairo have received a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. A Palestinian government official revealed that the proposal calls for an initial 60-day ceasefire and the release of hostages in two stages.
"The proposal is a framework agreement to begin negotiations for a permanent ceasefire," the official, who declined to be named, told AFP on Monday (18/8/2025).
The official said Hamas would hold internal consultations among its leaders and with leaders of other Palestinian factions to review the proposals from the mediators.
Last week, the Palestinian group said a senior delegation was in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials on efforts to secure a ceasefire with Israel.
Along with Qatar and the United States, Egypt has been involved in mediation between Israel and Hamas. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who visited the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Monday, revealed efforts to secure a ceasefire.
"As we speak, there are Palestinian and Qatari delegations present on Egyptian soil to intensify efforts to end the systematic killings and starvation," Abdellaty said.
Last week, Abdelatty said that Cairo was working with Qatar and the United States to broker a 60-day ceasefire.
"With the release of several hostages and several Palestinian prisoners and the flow of humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza without restrictions," he said.
More than two weeks of negotiations in the Qatari capital, Doha, ended without any progress last month. The evening has now entered its 23rd month.
