US experts have no doubt: The murder of Charlie Kirk could make the US a more dangerous country.

About the worst thing that could have happened.

This is what US expert Hilmar Mjelde thinks about the murder of Charlie Kirk.

– I fear more violence directly in response to this and what this will mean for the political situation leading up to next year's midterm elections and the presidential election in 2028.

A number of Norwegian US experts agree with him.

– In a country with a lot of weapons and a lot of anger, this is very worrying, says Civita advisor and US expert Eirik Løkke.

Do you think the US is more dangerous now?

– In the final analysis, this could contribute to an increase in political violence and extremism, says author and US expert Gjermund Stenberg Eriksen.

Kirk, an influential figure on the right wing of American politics, was shot and killed at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday night. President Donald Trump confirmed the killing and said in a statement that Kirk was loved and admired by all.

Eriksen believes the murder makes the United States much more dangerous.

– It is because this murder has a radicalizing effect. This will help to further dismantle American democracy.

According to Eriksen, Kirk was a very important figure for the Maga movement and one of the few who was close to the Trump family.

– He has been incredibly skilled at building a following and a movement that supported Maga. He was not an extremist, but a guy with very harsh statements.

– What could be the consequences of this murder?

– This will raise the temperature level considerably. Now the level of conflict between the left and the right will rise, and I am afraid that this will escalate the rhetoric from the Maga movement.

Will become more polarized

Videos circulating on social media show Kirk being shot in the neck while he was sitting in a tent speaking to a large crowd.

Prominent figures on both sides of American politics gave their support to Kirk, who has been called the youth whisperer on the right wing in the United States.

But Eirik Løkke believes the United States will become even more polarized in the future.

He fears that the United States could end up in a spiral of violence. The first step towards this is that conspiracy theories about who is behind it will spread online, Løkke believes.

– The Maga community will probably blame the Democrats. Extremists may want to retaliate for the murder.

Kirk was known for meeting students at universities. Such events may become fewer, Løkke believes.

– Politicians will need more security and become less accessible.

The killing of Kirk could also give Trump a pretext to step up the hunt for enemies.

– The murder is cruel in itself. But Trump can use it to tighten his grip on democracy now, says Løkke.

Trump blames the radical left

So far, no one has been arrested for the murder. The motive is also unknown. On X yet President Trump places responsibility for the murder on the radical left.

"For years, the radical left has compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world's worst mass murderers and criminals. This type of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism we see in our country today," Trump said in a video recorded in the Oval Office.

In the video, Trump also announces that he will crack down on anyone who has somehow contributed to Kirk's death.

"We will find every single person who contributed to this atrocity and other political violence, including the organizations that fund and support it," Trump said.

Trump does not say anything about which organizations he is referring to here.

This is war.

According to Wired, social media is now flooded with calls for revenge, violence, and attacks on the left.

The well-known conspiracy theorist and podcast host Alex Jones is among many who have now made strong statements.

This is war. This is war. This is war, he said during a broadcast on his channel Infowars.

Stewart Rhodes founded the far-right organization Oath Keepers. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison for storming Congress in 2021, but was pardoned by Trump when he assumed presidential power.

According to Wired, Rhodes now says he wants to build a militia to protect people on the right.

Former District Attorney Ed Martin quotes a Bible verse about revenge on X:

X and Tesla owner Elon Musk, who was a special adviser to the Trump administration earlier this year, writes on X that the left is the murderous party.

Far-right activist Laura Loomer, who reportedly served as an unofficial advisor to Trump, refers to the left as terrorists. She describes what has happened as a turning point in American history.

Now: Action, she writes further.

Politicians on both sides exposed

On July 14th of last year, Trump was shot and wounded during the election campaign. This marks the second time in less than a year that prominent figures on the right wing of American politics have been shot.

According to Hilmar Mjelde, political violence is a part of American politics and always has been.

– The danger increases the more politically divided the country is, so in the current situation the danger is great for all prominent political figures in the United States.

– What does it mean that this happened at a university?

– This can happen at any political event, unfortunately. Politicians on the right and the left are really equally at risk. I have long said that someone was going to be killed.
