247 – During an emergency meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, China made a strong appeal to the United States to cease actions that could aggravate tensions in the Caribbean. The news was published by Global Times this Friday (10).
Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong warned Washington not to use the fight against drug trafficking as a pretext to threaten the safety of navigation and violate international law, saying US actions jeopardize the peace and sovereignty of countries in the region, especially Venezuela.
Denunciation of military actions in the Caribbean
According to Fu Cong, the United States has deployed naval forces in Caribbean waters near the Venezuelan coast under the pretext of combating drug trafficking. The diplomat stated that such operations have resulted in the sinking of Venezuelan vessels, the deaths of sailors, and the seizure of fishing boats, exacerbating regional instability.
“The US’s unilateral and excessive operations against other countries’ vessels in supposedly international waters violate basic human rights, including the right to life,” Fu said.
The ambassador added that these actions threaten the freedom and security of navigation and may undermine the freedom of the seas guaranteed by international law, constituting “serious violations of the sovereignty, security and legitimate rights of other countries”.
Defense of sovereignty and international law
Fu stressed that China firmly opposes any act that violates the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and the interference of external forces in Venezuela's internal affairs.
"The use or threat of force in international relations is unacceptable. China has always supported legitimate international cooperation in combating transnational crimes, within bilateral and multilateral legal frameworks," the diplomat stated.
He further warned that Unilateral operations by the United States violate international law and put regional peace and security at risk, demanding a firm response from the international community in defense of multilateralism.
Geopolitical context
The U.S. military presence near Venezuelan territory has been a source of growing concern among Latin American countries. Under the pretext of combating drug trafficking, Washington has intensified its naval operations in the Caribbean, which, according to Beijing, poses a threat to Venezuela's stability and national sovereignty.
