(Hanoi = Yonhap News) Correspondent Park Jin-hyung = On the 26th (local time), the first day of his first Asian tour since taking office as a second term president, U.S. President Donald Trump presided over the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which had recently been in military conflict, and showed off his status as a 'peacemaker.'

President Trump also signed trade agreements with Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as key mineral cooperation agreements, and strengthened trade cooperation with ASEAN countries ahead of the summit and trade negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for the 30th.

President Trump, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the site of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit, jointly signed the ceasefire agreement with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand, Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, the chair of ASEAN.

Under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, Thailand and Cambodia pledged to end all hostilities, including armed conflict, withdraw heavy weapons from the border area, and cooperate in clearing landmines.

An ASEAN monitoring group, including Malaysia, will monitor the ceasefire, and Thailand will repatriate 18 Cambodian prisoners of war.

At the signing ceremony, President Trump said,"Today is a momentous day for all the people of Southeast Asia as we sign this historic agreement ending the military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand."

"I'm also very excited because we've done something that many people said couldn't be done and probably saved millions of lives," he said.

In response, Thai Prime Minister Anutin said that the signing of this agreement would open a new chapter in the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia, and expressed gratitude for President Trump's personal dedication to peace between the two countries.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also expressed deep gratitude to President Trump for his decisive leadership and support for peace.

President Trump, who has expressed his intention to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, has requested that ASEAN, Thailand, and Cambodia hold a peace agreement signing ceremony that he will preside over during the ASEAN summit.

At President Trump's behest, Thailand and Cambodia recently held peace talks and agreed on the terms of a peace agreement.

Earlier in late July, Thailand and Cambodia fought a border battle that left at least 48 people dead over five days.

At the time, President Trump pressured both countries to reach a ceasefire, using the suspension of trade negotiations as leverage, and the two countries reached a ceasefire at the end of July through Malaysia's mediation.

President Trump also met with Prime Minister Anwar on the same day and signed a trade agreement and a key minerals agreement.

Accordingly, Malaysia pledged to provide most-favored-nation treatment and to address non-tariff barriers to trade, allowing U.S. products preferential access to the Malaysian market.

The two countries also agreed to cooperate in diversifying the global supply chain of key minerals and promoting investment through the Key Minerals Agreement, and Malaysia agreed not to block or impose limits (quotas) on exports of key minerals, such as rare earth elements, to the United States.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer, who was present, said the agreements were a"significant milestone" that would improve bilateral relations beyond trade, and that she expected the agreements to benefit U.S. agriculture, technology and services sectors.

President Trump also signed a trade agreement with Cambodia and a cooperation agreement on key minerals with Thailand.

Under the agreement, Cambodia pledged to eliminate 100% of import tariffs on US goods and address non-tariff barriers. The US also plans to provide reciprocal tariff exemptions on hundreds of Cambodian imports.

The White House announced today that the United States has reached a broad agreement with Vietnam on tariffs and market access, and plans to conclude negotiations within weeks.

In his speech at the U.S.-ASEAN summit that day, President Trump told ASEAN leaders,"I send a message to the Southeast Asian nations that the United States will be with you 100 percent and will be a strong partner for generations to come."

President Trump later met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with whom he has been at odds over tariffs, to discuss ways to resolve the trade friction between the two countries.

"We are getting along very well with Brazil. Ultimately, we will have a good relationship with Brazil," he said, adding that the two countries would reach some kind of agreement that would be good for both sides.

He added that he believes the negotiations between the two countries will be left to the trade delegations and will reach a conclusion very quickly.

Regarding China, President Trump said he was optimistic about the public negotiations and expected a very fair summit.

"We will reach a good agreement with China," he said."We will see them (Chinese leaders) at the end of the year, either in China or in Washington, D.C., or at Mar-a-Lago."
