Iran launched a massive missile and drone attack on Israel early Sunday in response to Israeli airstrikes that hit Iranian energy facilities.

The Israeli military said its air defense system was activated after sirens sounded in several cities in northern Israel, including the coastal city of Haifa. Authorities urged residents to immediately take shelter. The attack also hit several residential buildings and set fires on the northern coast.

Iran's IRNA news agency said the attack involved more than 100 ballistic missiles and drones. Although Israeli air defenses intercepted dozens of the missiles outside the country's airspace, some of them reached their targets, including the Haifa oil refinery, a strategically important target. Tehran said the strikes were in response to attacks on Israel's energy sector.

The Red Star of David rescue service reported that four people were killed in a strike on a central Israeli settlement, according to MTI. Earlier, three deaths were reported from the same area.

The dead included two women, one in her sixties and the other in her eighties, as well as a boy around ten and a young girl. Ambulances said a total of 99 people were injured in the attack, four of whom are in critical condition.

Israel did not remain indebted with the answer

The IDF said it had struck military targets in Tehran, including an underground missile facility in Khorramabad, western Iran. Witnesses reported several loud detonations from the northern part of the capital. Brigadier General Effi Defrin said the destroyed target was “one of the most important military hubs of the Iranian regime,” where surface-to-surface missiles and maneuvering drones were stored, as well as missile launch silos.

The attacks led Iran to partially suspend production at a plant in the South Fars gas field, the world's largest gas producer. The facility is located in a joint Iranian-Qatari territory and plays a key role in Iran's gas supply. The Israeli drone strike caused a massive fire at the Kangan plant that was brought under control within hours. The facility mainly produces liquefied natural gas and petroleum products.

There is no official figure yet on the number of Iranian casualties. According to reports, widespread internet restrictions have been imposed in the region following the Israeli attacks.

The attacks have been going on for three days now.

As previously reported, Israel launched a major airstrike on Iran early Friday, targeting the Persian state's nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. Minutes after the first explosions over Tehran, both Iran and Israel declared a state of emergency, as the region teeters on the brink of another war. Iran confirmed the deaths of several senior officials, including the commander of the Revolutionary Guard and the chief of staff.

Donald Trump said the United States had advance knowledge of the Israeli operation but did not take a military role in it. The US president stressed that their goal remains to restart negotiations with Iran, while confirming that several Iranian leaders were killed in the attacks.

Meanwhile, The retaliatory strike has also begun, Iran has launched around 100 unmanned aircraft towards Israeli territory, Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman Brigadier General Effie Defrin announced on Friday morning. The Israeli military is currently working with all its might to intercept and destroy these drones before they reach their targets in Israeli territory.

Our newspaper asked a Hungarian businesswoman living in Tehran, Barbara Ujvári, about the effects of the attack. When we asked her, she said that this was the first military operation by Tel Aviv that also affected civilian buildings. The explosions were very loud, practically the entire population of the Iranian capital woke up. There may be more civilian victims of the offensive, but despite this, there is no panic in the city. Both domestic and international flights have been canceled.

József Kis-Benedek security policy expert told Index: Israel's move was not very welcome for the United States, even if it was not unexpected. According to the security policy expert, the situation in the region will be even more tense than before, and the armed action between Israel and Iran could last for weeks.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart on Friday, who informed him of the reasons for the attack on Iran and the background to the decision. The head of Hungarian diplomacy said that an extraordinary duty regime has been introduced at foreign missions in the region, but that they are currently not aware of any citizens in trouble.

Following the Israeli attack on Friday morning, Benjamin Netanyahu left the country for Athens, and Iran has already named a successor to the head of the Revolutionary Guard. Among the world leaders, US President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed their views on the airstrike, while the British government and the Russian Foreign Ministry have also issued statements.

Israel continued its strikes against Iran during the day , while sirens sounded in the Jewish state due to a missile launched from Yemen. After the latest Israeli attack, Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel, several of which penetrated the Iron Dome. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told his people in a recorded video that they would take revenge. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to mediate between Israel and Iran.

At dawn on Saturday, new rocket attacks hit major Israeli cities: explosions and smoke plumes over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem indicated that Iranian missiles had hit. The Israeli army issued an alert and asked people to immediately go to shelters, which they could only leave with official permission. Four people were killed and dozens were injured in the attacks. Meanwhile, Iran officially announced that it considers the continuation of nuclear negotiations with the United States pointless, after – according to them – Washington approved Israel's military action. Diplomatic tensions have reached a new level, while more and more civilians in the region have to live in the shadow of missiles. Tehran's military leaders have threatened new attacks against Israel, and have even warned that the armed conflict could soon reach American bases.

A Hungarian tour guide who has lived in Israel for 28 years shared her experiences with Index. Zsuzsa explained when and how they are alerted in the event of an attack, and what shelters they can take. She also spoke about the public mood and how the barrage of rockets on the country is affecting basic services.
