Brazilian Response to Trump's Threats

247 - The United States Embassy in Brazil released a statement on Wednesday (9) reinforcing President Donald Trump's position in defense of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). In an attack on Brazilian sovereignty, Trump stated in posts on his social media that Bolsonaro is the victim of alleged political persecution and that the former president 'is not guilty of anything'. However, Bolsonaro is a defendant in the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for attempted coup d'état.

The US embassy statement says Bolsonaro and his family are"partners" of the country and claims the former president is suffering "shameful" political persecution."Jair Bolsonaro and his family have been strong partners of the United States. The political persecution against him, his family, and his supporters is shameful and disrespectful of Brazil's democratic traditions. We echo President Trump's statement. We are closely monitoring the situation. We do not comment on the State Department's next actions regarding specific cases," the statement reads.

On Monday, Trump posted on the social network Truth Social that Bolsonaro is the victim of a"terrible injustice." "Brazil is doing a terrible thing in its treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. I have watched, as has the world, as they do nothing but persecute him, day after day, night after night, month after month, year after year!" Trump wrote. In another passage, he added:"He is guilty of nothing except fighting for the people." For the US president, the only legitimate form of trial would be"a trial by the Brazilian people—that's called an election."

On Tuesday (8), the US president made a new post in which he asks for “the great former president of Brazil to be left alone” and says that the proceedings against Bolsonaro are like a “witch hunt”.
