German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the United States is ready to help Europe provide security guarantees to Kyiv.

He said this in his first comment about the meeting in Alaska, which he gave on the ZDF TV channel, Ukrinform reports.

"There are security guarantees on the table that can guarantee in the long term the observance of the peace treaty with Russia. And the good news is that the United States is ready to participate in such security guarantees, not leaving it to the Europeans alone. But the Europeans must also do their part," Merz said.

The Chancellor noted that the US President had thoroughly informed Germany about his talks with Putin.

According to the head of government, this information goes far beyond what everyone heard at the joint press conference of Putin and Trump in Alaska. In particular, Trump made it clear that Russia seems ready to negotiate on the actual line of contact, and not on the official borders of the regions, which is a huge difference in position. But, the politician noted, the question also lies in what territorial concessions Kyiv is ready to make.

Merz believes that on this issue, Trump has not surrendered the positions that were jointly agreed upon by Ukraine, Europe, and the United States. According to him, Trump is not negotiating with Putin about territories through the heads of Ukrainians and Europeans.

Merz also noted that the last few days have managed to keep Europeans and Americans together, for which Germany has made a lot of efforts.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the Europeans consider the achievement of a ceasefire a necessary prerequisite for peace talks, which the US president had previously spoken about. But the Russian side was not ready for this. If, after the visit of the President of Ukraine to Washington and a possible trilateral meeting, a real peace agreement can be reached, this will be the most important result, the Chancellor said.

He assured that cooperation between Washington and European allies on Ukraine will continue.

As Ukrinform reported, US President Donald Trump and Putin held talks in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15.

After the meeting, Trump stressed that the talks had been extremely productive and had made progress on most of the issues discussed. However, the parties had not yet fully reached an agreement on several important issues.

Instead, Putin stated that he expects that"Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this constructively and will not obstruct it."
