"Our delegation reached a common understanding on the basic provisions of the agreement negotiated in Geneva," said Umerov, who was previously Ukraine's defense minister and is now secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.
"We are now counting on the support of our European partners in the next steps," Umerov said on Facebook, adding that Ukraine would like to organize a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States at the earliest convenient time in November to complete the final steps and reach an agreement with US President Donald Trump.
US media reports that high-ranking US officials are meeting with Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi today.
The 28-point plan proposed by the US was initially very favorable to Russia. It demanded that Ukraine return the territories occupied by Russia, as well as those that Russia had not conquered at all. It also required Kiev to pledge never to join NATO and to reduce its army.
The US plan was improved to take more account of Ukraine's position during talks in Geneva between US, Ukrainian and European representatives over the weekend. However, the Kremlin said on Monday that Russia would not accept the European-requested amendments.
