The target of the terrorist attack in Sydney on Bondi Beach was a Jewish gathering for Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.
Intelligence sources say that the attack on the Bondi Beach celebration was sophisticated and carefully planned, and bears the hallmarks of Unit 910, the external operational wing of Hezbollah, known for its operations abroad.
An Iranian link to the attack would fit a pattern of terrorist plots and attacks in Australia in recent years.
Israel's intelligence service Mossad announced in October that since October 7, 2023, it had prevented dozens of terrorist attacks around the world, targeting Jewish and Israeli targets.

Greece, Germany, Belgium, Sweden and Australia are listed among the countries where the attacks were prevented.
In August, Australia ordered Iran's ambassador to leave the country, following allegations that Tehran directed attacks on Jewish targets in Sydney and Melbourne, including the burning of a Sydney cafe in October 2024, as well as an attack on a Melbourne synagogue in December.
Director of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) Mike Burgess said at the time that his services had uncovered links"between alleged criminal acts and commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)".

Intelligence services also said they found evidence Iran was likely behind other anti-Semitic incidents in Australia, including attacks on Jewish schools, homes, vehicles and synagogues, following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing Gaza war.

Danny Citrinovitch, an Iran expert at the Institute for National Security Studies in Israel, said it was"too early to jump to conclusions," but added that Iran and Unit 910 were "definitely suspects and high on the priority list."

Ronen Solomon, an Israeli intelligence expert on Hezbollah, told the"Telegraph" that Australia has long been known as a center of Hezbollah and Iranian "sleeper cells", and that it is possible that this is a joint operation between Hezbollah and the Quds Force.
Solomon warned that if Iran or Hezbollah were linked to the attack, Tehran would try to portray the incident as an isolated anti-Semitic act.
He added that the eventual proof of their responsibility would provoke an Israeli response and further complicate the situation.
According to him, the attackers managed to bypass local security measures, gather detailed information about the target and thoroughly plan the attack.
Citrinovic added that Iran often uses intermediaries, criminal groups or local individuals, which is part of their usual modus operandi.
He emphasized that Sunni extremist groups such as Al Qaeda or Islamic State, which were also active in Australia, cannot be ruled out either. According to him, the investigation will be extremely complex because Iran or Hezbollah would cover their tracks very carefully.
An Israeli intelligence source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said all options were being considered, but that the attack bore the hallmarks of a state-backed operation, given the level of organization, the amount of weapons and the lengthy preparation.
