The news comes after Poland was hit by a Russian drone attack earlier this week.

During a press conference, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says that NATO will establish a new military unit and operation that will strengthen the security of the eastern NATO countries. It has been named Eastern Sentry.

This comes just days after at least 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace. This happened at the same time as Russia carried out a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine.

"Russia's negligence in the air is becoming more and more frequent. It is dangerous and unacceptable," Rutte said during the press conference.

NATO's supreme military commander, General Alexus Grynkewich, says Eastern Sentry will integrate air and ground defenses. He has ordered the operation to begin tonight.

The operation will involve a range of resources from allies, including Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and several others. It will also involve defense both in the air and on the ground.

According to NATO's military commander for Europe, Alexus G. Grynkewich, the military unit will protect all countries on NATO's eastern flank.

Rutte says that assessments of the drone incident in Poland are still ongoing.

The NATO chief also says he is very satisfied with how the United States responded to the drone attack.

Germany, France and the EU summoned Russia's ambassadors on Friday following the violation of Polish airspace.

Yesterday it was announced that Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Spain, among others, had done the same.
