President Claudia Sheinbaum held a telephone conversation with her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, in which they agreed to pause for 90 days the imposition of 30 percent tariffs on Mexican exports, which the U.S. president announced in a letter on July 12.
"We have agreed to extend, for a period of 90 days, the exact same agreement that we had for the last short period of time, which is that Mexico will continue to pay a 25 percent tariff on fentanyl trafficking, a 25 percent tariff on automobiles, and a 50 percent tariff on steel, aluminum, and copper," the American posted on his social network Truth Social.
"The complexities of a deal with Mexico are somewhat different than those of other nations due to both border issues and assets," the Republican continued.
According to the US president, Mexico agreed to end its non-tariff trade barriers,"of which there were many."
"We will be talking with Mexico over the next 90 days with the goal of signing a trade agreement somewhere within that 90-day timeframe, or longer," he said.

The call was not exclusively between Sheinbaum and Trump, as some US officials were also present, including:
- J.D. Vance, Vice President.
- Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury.
- Marco Rubio, Secretary of State.
- Howard Lutnick, Secretary of Commerce.
- Jamieson Greer, Trade Representative.
- Susie Wiles, Chief of Staff.
- Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, and the National Security Adviser.
"There will be continued cooperation at the border regarding all aspects of security, including drugs, drug distribution, and illegal immigration into the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he concluded.
Trump emphasized that the conversation was very successful and that the two leaders are increasingly understanding each other.
"We're getting to know each other and understanding each other better. The complexities of an agreement with Mexico are somewhat different from those of other nations, due to both the problems and assets on the border," he posted. Sheinbaum hails"a very good call."
President Claudia Sheinbaum prevented the 30 percent tariffs on Mexican products, which were scheduled to begin at the first minute of this Friday, from going into effect after a phone call with her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump.
Through her social media, the president announced that a 90-day period was agreed upon to reach an agreement through dialogue.
" We had a very good call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We avoided the tariff increase announced for tomorrow and we achieved 90 days to build a long-term agreement based on dialogue," he published on X.
In addition, she reported that the following Mexican officials participated with her:
- Juan Ramón De la Fuente, Secretary of Foreign Affairs.
- Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy.
- Roberto Velasco, Undersecretary for North America.

When were the tariffs going to start?
In a letter shared on his Truth Social network, Trump said the taxes would begin August 1 ; but this changed after the call.
It is important to note that Mexico is among the first countries to which the Republican imposed tariffs since he returned to the White House in January.
According to Donald Trump, these tariff measures are an incitement to the country to combat irregular migration and the trafficking of fentanyl, the powerful drug responsible for the health crisis and deaths in the United States.
