JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is advising the public not to be too worried about the low-magnitude earthquakes that hit Johor on Sunday (Aug 24).

Its director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said they would monitor the situation and issue information about earthquakes and the latest weather.

"Information can be obtained on our official website, the myCuaca app and social media channels, or through queries to the hotline 1-300 221 638," he said in a statement on Sunday.

He said that the 2.8-magnitude earthquake that hit at 9am occurred in the area of Yong Peng near Batu Pahat district, around 28km northwest of Kluang.

Analysis by MetMalaysia also revealed that two earthquakes occurred, with the first 4.1-magnitude quake in Segamat at 6.13am and the second in the Mersing Fault Zone area.

"The quake was also felt in certain areas around Melaka, Negri Sembilan and southern Pahang and was detected by Indonesia's Badan Meteorologi, Kimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG)," he added. – Bernama
