Starmer and Macron called for increased pressure on Putin over Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron today called on the partners in the"coalition of the willing" to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to force him to negotiate peace in Ukraine.
In London, after visiting a British military base, during a video call with other allied leaders gathered in Rome at a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, they confirmed their support for Kiev, claiming that they are taking the lead of a potential post-war military mission to ensure security in Ukraine.
Starmer estimated that"this coordinated pressure will make a difference".
"We should redirect our work to the preparation of peace, to achieve it by forcing Putin to the negotiating table," Starmer said.
He added that European peacekeeping plans are"mature" after months of planning, the Guardian reports, and states that Macron described the plans as"ready to use" once a ceasefire agreement is reached.

Meloni called for increased pressure on Moscow in order to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni today called for increased pressure on Moscow because, as she said, Russia does not show a willingness to make progress in negotiations to achieve peace in Ukraine.
"By mass and continuous bombing of civilians, Russia shows no readiness to make progress. Therefore, in parallel with the necessary support for Ukraine, I agree that we must also increase the pressure on Moscow to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and open the way for diplomacy. We must remember that this can only happen with deterrence,'' Meloni said at the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Rome.
