Skepticism about peace talks

Focus on security guarantees

Switzerland is ready to grant Russian dictator Vladimir Putin immunity if he comes to the country for peace talks in Ukraine. This was stated by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, writes Euractiv.

It is noted that Switzerland is obliged to arrest Putin because the International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for him. However, Cassis noted that under certain circumstances, the Russian dictator would be allowed to enter Switzerland.

"Last year, the Swiss government defined the rules for granting immunity to a person for whom an international arrest warrant has been issued. If this person comes to a peace conference, and not for personal reasons," said the Swiss Foreign Minister.

Cassis added that Switzerland is fully prepared to host a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, noting his country's many years of experience in hosting such events.

However, Cassis noted that Russia has"cooled off" towards Switzerland, which decided to join the sanctions imposed by European Union countries after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"I was told that since Switzerland adopted European sanctions, they (the Russians - UNIAN) have naturally lost some of their desire to do this in Switzerland," he added.

The publication recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron had previously raised the possibility of a summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He suggested organizing such a meeting in Europe, presumably in a"neutral" country.

"I insist on Geneva," Macron said on the French channel LCI.

Where could the meeting between Zelensky and Putin take place?

Earlier, Reuters, citing a senior US administration official, reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin can meet in Hungary Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with the LCI TV channel that a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and the Russian Federation could take place in Geneva.

Macron said that a"neutral" country should be chosen for the negotiations. According to him, it could be Switzerland.
