The territorial issue remains unresolved in the negotiations to end the war launched by Russia against Ukraine, and it is unknown how it will ultimately be recorded in documents, Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv.
He emphasized that Russia wants to gain control over all of Donbass, but Ukraine does not agree with this.
"The Americans are looking for some kind of format. They discussed the issue of a free economic zone. The Americans call it that, and the Russians call it a demilitarized zone," the president added.
He stressed that Kiev demands that the army remain where it is currently on the front line.
The US side, seeing the disagreements between Ukraine and Russia, is trying to offer a"compromise", Zelensky said.
"In their view, the Ukrainian army is withdrawing from the territory of the Donetsk region, and the compromise is supposedly that Russian troops do not enter this territory of the Donetsk region," the president explained."They don't know who will govern this territory, which they already call a free economic zone."
He emphasized that Ukraine cannot accept such a proposal, because when it comes to compromise, a fair compromise must be offered.
"We must continue negotiations and try to find answers to all questions so that everything is more adequate. For example, they retreated five kilometers, they also retreated five kilometers," Zelensky pointed out, adding that this happens in all wars and that some kind of monitoring is necessary.
