Trump made the announcement to the media after departing Andrews Air Force Base en route to a meeting with Putin.
Speaking about the upcoming meeting, Trump said that"something will come of it," Reuters news agency reported.
"It seems to me that they are trying to negotiate," the president noted.
Regarding Russia's continued attacks on Ukraine, Trump said:"Putin thinks it strengthens his negotiating position, but I think it hurts him."
Speaking about his talks with Putin, Trump also noted that"Ukraine should come to terms with the issue of territories."
Trump said he would not negotiate on behalf of Ukraine and Ukrainians.
"I have to let Ukraine make a decision. I think they'll make the right decision, but I'm not here to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine. I'm here to get them to the negotiating table," Trump said.
Regarding security guarantees for Kiev, the US president said:"Maybe together with Europe."
Trump also spoke about economic cooperation in the context of the upcoming talks: "If we make progress, I will discuss it."
