"I condemn the barbaric attack in Sydney during Hanukkah celebrations. Latvia stands in solidarity with Australia and the Jewish community around the world at this difficult time. I express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured," Rinkēvičs said on the social media platform "X".

LETA already reported that on Sunday, two attackers opened fire on a Jewish Hanukkah celebration on Sydney's Bondi Beach in Australia, killing 11 and injuring 27 people.

Police opened fire on the attackers, killing one and wounding the other. The injured attacker is in critical condition. Police have detained him.

Two police officers were injured in a shootout with the attackers.

While investigating the scene, police found a car containing homemade explosive devices. The car is linked to the gunman who was shot.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a televised address that"this is a targeted attack on Australian Jews on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a holiday of faith, - an act of evil, of anti-Semitism, of terrorism that has struck at the heart of our people."

"An attack on Australian Jews is an attack on every Australian," Albanese stressed.

Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog called the incident a"cruel attack on Jews" and called for increased action against anti-Semitism in Australia.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on the"X" platform that "Europe stands with Australia and Jewish communities around the world." "We stand united against violence, anti-Semitism and hatred," she stressed.
