Trump-Putin Phone Call Details

Ukrainian Response and European Support

Wladimir Putin

The telephone conversation between Russian President Putin and US President Trump lasted almost an hour. The main topic was the war in Ukraine. There were apparently no concrete results. They said they wanted to continue the dialogue.

According to President Vladimir Putin, Russia is sticking to its goals in Ukraine. Putin emphasized this in a telephone call with US President Donald Trump, Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov said after the conversation."Our president said that Russia will achieve its stated goals, namely, eliminate the causes that led to the current situation," Ushakov said."Russia will not abandon these goals."

Putin stated that Russia remains interested in a negotiated solution to the war and is ready to continue talks on that. However, the leadership in Moscow remains focused on eliminating the"root causes" of the conflict. Trump urged a rapid end to hostilities. The US president initially declined to comment on the talks.

Russia launched the war against its neighbor more than three years ago, arguing that Ukraine's NATO accession would endanger its own national security and that Moscow had to protect the neighboring country's Russian-speaking minority. Russia now also claims several territories in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Trump and Putin want to stay in touch

Trump and Putin spoke on the phone for almost an hour, Ushakov continued. They also discussed Iran and the Middle East. Both advocated resolving the conflict with Iran exclusively through diplomatic means. The conversation was constructive, and both leaders were"on the same page." The last time the two spoke was in early June.

The two presidents assured each other that they wanted to continue their dialogue. However, there were no concrete plans for a personal meeting. Ushakov further stated that Trump and Putin did not discuss the US's partial suspension of arms deliveries to Ukraine.

Only on Tuesday was it announced that the US had halted the delivery of some weapons to Ukraine. The Pentagon has since confirmed this, but has not provided any details. According to US media, the move concerns specific missiles and ammunition. The Department of Defense stated that the US is in the process of reviewing its own capabilities and has also halted aid to other countries. Department spokesman Sean Parnell emphasized, however, that the American armed forces have everything they need to carry out any mission in the world. Putin welcomed the partial suspension of arms deliveries.
