Polish Military Response and Defense Actions

US President Donald Trump has issued his first response to Russia’s drone incursion into Polish airspace overnight.

“What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.

Although it was not immediately clear what the post meant, Trump is set to speak to Polish President Karol Nawrocki later on Wednesday, according to a White House official.

The official also told ABC News that Trump and the White House are “tracking the reports out of Poland.”

Polish airspace was violated by at least 19 Russian drones overnight, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who also said that Poland is “closer to conflict than at any time since WW2” in response to the incursion.

Polish authorities said Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian airborne early warning and control (AWACS) reconnaissance planes, and NATO-operated refueling aircraft took part in intercepting several of the drones.

Poland also invoked NATO’s Article 4 under which members can call for urgent talks in the event that their “territorial integrity, political independence or security” is at risk.

Col. Martin L. O’Donnell, spokesperson for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, said that it was the first time in the alliance’s history that NATO aircraft had “engaged potential threats in Allied airspace.”

“NATO, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, and all of Allied Command Operations is committed to defending every kilometer of NATO territory, including our airspace,” he added.

Matthew Whitaker, the US ambassador to NATO, said on X that Washington stands by its NATO allies after the airspace violations, adding that the US “will defend every inch of NATO territory.”

Kyiv has accused Russia of “deliberately targeting” Poland, while Moscow denies the claims, saying “no targets on Polish territory were planned.” Russia’s charge d’affaires in Poland also claimed that Warsaw provided no evidence, despite debris suggesting otherwise.
