The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, assured that the closeness between the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and her counterpart, Donald Trump, represents an unprecedented rapprochement.

The diplomat indicated that this situation has allowed us to face common challenges and take advantage of opportunities, highlighting the agreement between both countries to pause the entry into force of tariffs imposed on our country by the Republican.

"The relationship between the United States and Mexico is truly unique. The ongoing conversations between Donald Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum reflect a special bond that allows us to face common challenges and seize new opportunities for both nations," the diplomat wrote on his X account, where he shared President Trump's message confirming the delay in the tariffs.

Tariffs have a new 90-day deadline

This morning, before her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke by phone with Donald Trump to negotiate a 90-day postponement of the entry into force of 30 percent tariffs on Mexican exports, imposed by the Republican in mid-July, among other things, to pressure Mexico in the fight against drug trafficking.

“We had a very good call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We avoided the tariff increase announced for tomorrow and gained 90 days to build a long-term agreement through dialogue,” the Mexican President wrote on her X account.

For his part, Trump explained that although the new taxes will be postponed, those already in effect will remain in place.

"We agreed to extend, for a period of 90 days, the exact same agreement we had for the last short period of time, which is that Mexico will continue to pay a 25 percent tariff on fentanyl trafficking, a 25 percent tariff on automobiles, and a 50 percent tariff on steel, aluminum, and copper," the Republican magnate noted.
