Next week, the defense and foreign ministers of the EU countries will discuss the issues of security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation, while reminding that the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, cannot be trusted.
This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, on the social network X, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Putin cannot be trusted to fulfill any promise or obligation,” Kallas emphasized.
In this regard, the top diplomat believes, security guarantees for Ukraine must be"strong and reliable enough to deter Russia from regrouping and attacking again."
She added that the EU will contribute to these security guarantees, in particular by training the Ukrainian military and strengthening the Armed Forces and the defense industry of Ukraine.
The EU will also continue to “targetedly attack” Russia’s war economy, she stressed, noting that “the next package of sanctions against Moscow should be ready by next month.”
"I have put these topics at the top of the agenda for discussion next week at the level of EU foreign and defense ministers," Kallas concluded.
As Ukrinform reported, on August 19, members of the European Council discussed in a video conference the results of yesterday's meetings in Washington aimed at achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. Also today, participants of the Coalition of the Willing held a virtual meeting.
