U.S. President Donald Trump said the escalation of the trade war against China, which he himself initiated, is unsustainable. In an interview with Fox Business, Trump argued that the high tariff levels imposed on China by the U.S. cannot last.

"It's not sustainable, but that's the number," Trump said in an excerpt from the Fox Business interview. He then, almost contradictorily, said that the high tariffs"could stay in place, they forced me to do it," thus shifting the blame to China.

Tariffs imposed on China reached 145%, a spike in customs duties between the two countries that peaked in May. However, the two nations have since entered a 90-day tariff truce, and currently only 35% tariffs are in effect on Chinese goods. However, Donald Trump threatened last week an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods, which could take effect as early as November 1st if the two economic blocs fail to reach a different agreement.

Recent developments, such as China's response to US port tariffs and a restriction on rare earth exports, prompted the US leader to react with this new threat of imposing an additional 100% tariff. Meanwhile, the US also tightened restrictions on technology exports, particularly in the semiconductor sector, to China.

Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were scheduled to meet on the sidelines of a summit in South Korea in late October. But the American leader recently threatened to withdraw from the meeting, believing the Chinese side was uninterested in hearing American proposals.

In Friday's interview, Donald Trump assured that he gets along well with Xi Jinping." I think everything will be fine with China, but we have to have a fair deal. It has to be fair," he added.
