American President Donald Trump on Thursday said he will meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Hungary to try to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, but the date is still to be determined.

Trump said he and Putin had made “great progress" in a telephone call and had agreed to meet in Budapest. Posting about the conversation on Truth Social, he said the meeting will be “to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ war, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end".

“I have just concluded my telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, and it was a very productive one. President Putin congratulated me and the United States on the Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East, something that, he said, has been dreamed of for centuries," Trump said on Truth Social.

Trump, who seemed pumped up from his success with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with regard to the Gaza war, said he believes that his “success" with that “peace deal" in the Middle East will help in his negotiations with Putin. He said the two spent “a great deal of time" talking about trade cooperation between Russia and the United States once the Ukraine war was over.

“We also spent a great deal of time talking about Trade between Russia and the United States when the War with Ukraine is over. At the conclusion of the call, we agreed that there will be a meeting of our High Level Advisors, next week," he said.

He said the initial US meetings will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end," he added.

This comes a day before the US President’s talks in Washington with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will be in the White House to push for US-made for US-made Tomahawk missiles.

“President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more. I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation," he said.

If the two leaders meet in Hungary, this will be their second since Trump returned to office. They had met in Alaska in August without a breakthrough on ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to a report in AFP, there was no immediate reaction from the Kremlin — or from Zelenskyy. While the Ukrainian leader will push for Trump to put pressure on Putin to end the war, “the main topic of discussion is Tomahawks", as per a senior Ukrainian official.

The AFP reported that Trump is considering a request from Ukraine for American-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have range of around 1,600 km and could strike deep into Russia.

Putin, meanwhile, has warned that the Tomahawks supply will be counted as a “whole new level of escalation". These missiles, however, will be a major addition to Ukraine’s arsenal, consolidating Kyiv’s long-range strike abilities.

The Russia-Ukraine war is now in its fourth year, with Russia launching fresh attacks on energy facilities in eastern Ukraine. It repeated the pattern of focusing on Kyiv’s power network like every winter.
