The government declares August 7 a day of national mourning in memory of Iliescu / The announcement sparked controversial reactions

"To ask for a people's mourning for the man who condemned their future is an act of moral betrayal and an insult to the young people shot in Timișoara, Cluj, Bucharest.  "Christian forgiveness" is invoked, but it is forgotten that behind that gentle smile were: The death of over 1000 people in December '89, the Mining Raids that mutilated democracy, the confiscation and destruction of the national economy, the destruction of justice and the plundering of the Romanian people's heritage.

It is a slap in the face to those who were beaten, arrested, silenced. It is a mockery of the millions of Romanians who have gone into exile, from a country that has become a colony.

We firmly demand: The cancellation of any form of national funeral. The refusal of any public authority in Romania to participate in the glorification of this character. The assumption of historical truth instead of the false rewriting of recent history. Romania will never be reborn as long as those who robbed it are honored, and those who died for it are forgotten”, wrote the naist Nicolae Voiculeț, awarded with numerous international awards.

The Government Meeting was convened on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. to declare August 7 a day of national mourning in memory of Iliescu. The Government Meeting was convened this evening at 7:30 p.m.

Minister of Transport, Ciprian Şerban: His departure leaves a void that is difficult to fill in the great social-democratic family

The Minister of Transport, Ciprian Şerban, states that"Romania is saying goodbye to one of the most prominent figures of its recent history: Ion Iliescu, the first president of post-December Romania, founder of modern social democracy and a politician of exquisite finesse."

"His departure leaves a void that is difficult to fill in the great social-democratic family, but also in the conscience of a nation that learned, through him, what dignity, balance and responsibility mean in an era of reconstruction. Ion Iliescu was not only a statesman. He was a teacher, a model of calm, modesty and deep love for Romania. As Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, but also as a member of the great social-democratic family, I express my gratitude for the immense contribution that President Ion Iliescu had in the formation of modern Romania. His departure saddens us, but obliges us to carry forward what he built: a democratic, solidary Romania dedicated to the common good. His lessons of patience, vision and sustainable construction remain with us," Ciprian Şerban wrote on Facebook.

He sent his condolences to the family.

"Condolences to the grieving family and to all those who knew and valued him. We say goodbye with pain in our hearts, but with deep gratitude for the man who marked an era. May his memory and values accompany us on the path we continue. May God rest him in peace," added Ciprian Şerban.

A similar message was sent by the Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan.

"Today, Romania says goodbye to Ion Iliescu, the first president of post-communist democracy, founder of our party and, for many, the symbol of a tense but necessary transition. As a young man who grew up in a Romania built in part on his decisions and hesitations, I feel I have a duty to say a few things not only about what was, but also about what remains," Minister Bogdan Ivan posted on Facebook.

He made an analysis of Ion Iliescu's career.

“Ion Iliescu was a product of our complicated history. He lived in times when the choice was not between good and evil, but between chaos and survival. He was a communist. Then, he was a reformer. Then, he was president. Three different roles, in one life. And, yes – he made mistakes. He delayed reforms. He tolerated excesses. He protected people who should not have been protected. But at the same time, he offered stability, order, and a form of human continuity, at a time when Romania could very easily have fallen into anarchy. What do we learn from his legacy? We do not need a cult of Ion Iliescu. But we do need an honest reading of his era, because in the past that we avoid, there are often hidden the mistakes that we are tempted to repeat. Iliescu showed us what a state that protects means, but also what a state that hesitates to reform means. He understood the pain of simple people, but"he did not always manage to see the future that was coming galloping by," Bogdan Ivan also wrote.

Prime Minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan

Although part of the same coalition, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was more reserved in his statements than PSD leaders, a distancing that can be attributed to his liberal orientation.

"Ion Iliescu, former president of Romania and political leader in the period after 1989, passed away today. He held the position of head of state for two terms and led the main left-wing party of those years," Bolojan said.

He recalled some of the defining moments of Iliescu's mandates, including the Snagov Declaration and the revision of the 2003 Constitution two legislative milestones that, according to the prime minister,"were the basis for major changes in political and institutional terms."

"His disappearance represents the end of a significant stage in the country's recent history, marked by the post-communist transition and essential transformations in public life. Ion Iliescu now enters history and its proper analysis," Ilie Bolojan also said.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the family, friends and loved ones.

Former President Ion Iliescu died on Tuesday at the age of 95. He passed away after his organs failed. Iliescu was suffering from lung cancer and had been hospitalized for almost two months at the"Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu" Emergency Clinical Hospital in the capital, where he went at his request.
