During a session at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, former presidential envoy and Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing, Marshall Billingslea, denounced the use of “dirty” money from the Venezuelan regime of Nicolás Maduro in the campaign of Gustavo Petro, as well as in other campaigns of left-wing politicians in Latin America.
“The key point here is that, when you look at the regime that has fostered the socialist plague that has spread across Latin America, it is the Venezuelans. It is corrupt and dirty Venezuelan money that financed the Petro campaign. They funneled money to Mexico. They funneled money to Brazil,” he said.
Marshall Billingslea, a former senior official in Donald Trump's administration, has alleged that Nicolás Maduro's regime financed the campaigns of Gustavo Petro and other leftist candidates in the region. https://t.co/if1kX8qDUN — Revista Semana (@RevistaSemana) October 21, 2025

Billingslea later asserted that when the Maduro dictatorship falls in Venezuela, he predicted a harsh fate for such funding to leftist movements in the region, according to statements from Washington.
“Once democracy is restored in Venezuela, all that subversive money that has financed socialist campaigns in the region will dry up, as will the Cuban regime's oil revenues and all its support for Nicaraguans. We're forgetting what Ortega is doing to the Nicaraguan people. It's a farce,” he said.
