According to his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, Trump"believes it is still possible" to bring Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky face to face in an attempt to move towards a peace agreement.

"The president will try to move the peace process forward," Leavitt said, quoted by Sky News, adding that Putin had shown himself"willing to sit down at the negotiating table with Trump."

The conversation, which lasted about two hours, was described by the White House as"good and productive."

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump said Putin congratulated him on the"great achievement of peace in the Middle East," which he said had been "dreamed of for centuries."

The two leaders agreed to hold a high-level team meeting, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, next week. This will be followed by a direct meeting between Trump and Putin in Budapest, Hungary,"to see if we can end this shameful war between Russia and Ukraine," the US president said.

Trump added that he would discuss the results of the call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting scheduled for Friday at the White House.

During the call, according to the American leader, Putin thanked the first lady, Melania Trump, for her"involvement in supporting children," referring to a letter she had sent him in August, in Alaska, regarding the fate of missing Ukrainian children.

Trump also stated that there were also discussions about economic cooperation between the US and Russia after the end of the war.
