Trump-Putin Meeting Announcement

Media Analysis and Speculation

Trump will meet Putin for a physical meeting in Alaska on August 15. The US president announced this during the night of Saturday. The Kremlin has also confirmed the meeting. The last time the two met was in 2019.

On Friday, Trump said a peace deal is"very close."

At the same time, several news media, including Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, have reported that USA 's bid involves major land concessions for Ukraine.

European leaders are skeptical of the proposal, reports Wall Street Journal , and an emergency meeting is planned for the weekend.

The US administration is now working feverishly to interpret reactions and get European leaders to accept the agreement, according to Politico.

Sources: It was said during the meeting

Already on Wednesday, US envoy Steve Witkoff met with the Russian president in Moscow. Since then, there has been speculation about what was said during the negotiations and what kind of agreement is on the table.

According to Axios Citing two sources, Putin has reportedly offered to end the war if Ukraine gives up the Crimean peninsula and the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. He has in turn been prepared to withdraw from Zaporizhia and Kherson.

Trump also states that the exchange of territory is part of the agreement.

"We're looking at it, but we're actually looking at getting some back and some exchanges. It's very complicated. There will be some territorial exchange for the benefit of both," he says.

Crisis meetings this weekend

Representatives from several European countries, Ukraine and the United States are planning to meet in the UK this weekend for a crisis summit – ahead of Trump’s meeting with Putin next week. It is still unclear exactly when and where the meeting will take place.

Ukraine and several NATO countries are concerned that Trump will run them over and ignore their demands in the negotiations, sources told Axios. Ukrainian officials told the newspaper they are confused by the US stance and the details of the Russian proposal.

At the same time, it is pointed out that, according to Ukrainian law, Zelensky would have to call a referendum in order to cede territory.

Ukraine rejects the plan

On Saturday morning, the Ukrainian president says that Ukraine will not give up territory to reach peace with Russia.

“Ukrainians will not give up their country to the occupying power,” he says in a video on Telegram.

He further says that any decisions made without Ukrainian representation are meaningless and"stillborn."
