Putin's Weakened Position

Dmitriev is scheduled to meet with officials from US President Donald Trump's administration to"continue discussing US-Russia relations". Axios reports that he is scheduled to meet with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami over the weekend.

The visit comes at a time of growing discontent in the US with the Kremlin's refusal to end the war in Ukraine and shortly after Trump announced that he was canceling a planned summit with Putin.

The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, putting additional pressure on Moscow in its efforts to get it to agree to a ceasefire in the war with Ukraine.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Dmitriev, describing him as a"close associate of Putin."

In April, Dmitriev became the first Russian official to visit Washington since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

During the visit, he met with Vitkoff, and it was seen as an important step towards improving relations between the Kremlin and the White House.

In April, a source told CNN that the US government had temporarily lifted sanctions on Dmitriev so that the State Department could issue him a visa to enter the US.
