Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is set to visit China for a four-day visit between Aug. 31 and Sept. 3, according to his spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov called the visit “completely unprecedented” and said it would involve bilateral delegation meetings, though the full agenda remains unclear.

“Putin will make a completely unprecedented visit to China, for which active preparations are currently underway,” Peskov said on Wednesday, Aug. 27, according to Russian state media TASS.

He added that a bilateral meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping is planned alongside unspecified events organized by Beijing.

“It needs to be included in the events that will be organized by our Chinese friends,” Peskov added.

TASS reported that Putin’s planned visit coincided with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin between Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, as well as a military parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on Sept. 3 commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chinese victory against Japan in WWII.

Putin’s visit also follows recent remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggesting that China be involved in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.

He added that both Moscow and Beijing should be involved in the discussions, offers that Kyiv rejected.

The Kremlin has also rejected Western troop deployments as part of the security guarantees, despite telling Trump that it is open to the idea in principle.

China has positioned itself as a potential mediator to end Moscow’s full-scale invasion since it began in 2022, a bid that has made little progress.

Critics have also slammed Beijing’s ties with Moscow, whose continued trade with Russia has enabled it to finance the Ukraine invasion.

Xi also congratulated Ukraine on its independence on Sunday – the first such message after Moscow’s 2022 invasion.
