G20 Summit Dynamics

Diplomatic Negotiations and Consultations

The United States, the European Union and Ukraine will meet on Sunday in Geneva to discuss Donald Trump's peace plan. The 28 points will be the focus of the meeting in Switzerland, which will be attended, on behalf of the US, by the head of US diplomacy Marco Rubio and the US president's special envoy, Steve Witkoff. US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, who was received in Kiev by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, is already in the Swiss city to participate in the talks, a US official told AFP. Diplomatic sources have announced that Italy will be represented at the consultations by Fabrizio Saggio, diplomatic advisor to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Saggio left the G20 summit in Johannesburg to attend the meeting, which will be held at the level of National Security Advisor. European and G7 leaders"welcome" the proposal but emphasize that it "will require further work." And from the US, Trump, responding to reporters, nevertheless made it clear that his offer on the peace plan" is not final." The plan proposed by Washington to resolve the crisis in Ukraine does not represent "even remotely" a " final offer " to Kiev, the US president said speaking from the White House lawn."We would like to achieve peace. This should have happened a long time ago. We are trying to end the conflict one way or another," he told reporters."If Zelensky rejects the plan, then he can continue to fight to the very end of his limited forces."

EU and G7 leaders: "More work is needed."

In a joint statement, the EU leaders and the leaders of European countries and the G7 (including Giorgia Meloni) – who met on the sidelines of the G20 in Johannesburg to discuss the peace plan – said they “welcome the continued efforts of the United States to bring peace to Ukraine. The initial draft of the 28-point plan includes important elements that will be essential for a just and lasting peace. We therefore believe,” the statement continues, “that the draft constitutes a foundation that will require further work.” Without “deterrents, the Russians will return,” French President Emmanuel Macron said of the peace plan for Ukraine. Macron also added that the"coalition of the willing" supporting Ukraine will hold a video call on Tuesday. Meloni, in her speech at the first working session of the G20, simply declared that"Italy is ready to collaborate with its European and American partners to achieve a just peace."

US pressure

While waiting to see if there is any room for maneuver, Washington is pushing the Ukrainian president to accept the agreement in the coming days under the threat that if Kiev doesn't sign, it will face a worse deal in the future. This is what US officials told NATO allies, as reported by the Guardian. The US Army secretary briefed NATO ambassadors during a meeting in Kiev on Friday evening, following talks with Zelensky and a phone call from the White House."No deal is perfect, but it needs to be done as quickly as possible," he told them, according to a person present, cited by the newspaper. The atmosphere in the room was described as gloomy, with several European ambassadors questioning the content of the agreement and the way the United States had conducted negotiations with Russia without keeping its allies informed."It was a nightmare meeting. It was the same old 'you have no cards to play' argument again," the source added, referring to Trump's statement during the controversial White House meeting in February.

Zelensky:"Prevent a third Russian invasion"

“True peace is always based on guaranteed security and justice,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, adding, with a reference to Donald Trump’s plan, that there is “much more at stake than specific points in one document or another,” stating that the main thing is to prevent “a third Russian invasion and that the principle that “crimes against humanity” can be “rewarded or pardoned” should not prevail. The Ukrainian president expressed confidence that the Ukrainian delegation he had chosen for talks with allies “knows how to protect Ukrainian national interests and knows exactly what is needed to prevent Russia from a third invasion.”

EU to hold special meeting on Ukraine on Monday

Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa has invited all 27 EU leaders to a special meeting on Ukraine, to be held on Monday on the sidelines of the European Union-African Union summit. The meeting was announced on social media:"We are ready to engage to ensure that a future peace is sustainable," he wrote.
