A. Parubiy was born on January 31, 1971 in the village of Sheptytskyi, Lviv region. The murdered politician was married and had a daughter, Yara.
In 1994, he graduated from the Faculty of History of Lviv State University, and in 2001, he completed postgraduate studies at the Department of Political Science and Sociology of Lviv Polytechnic National University.
As a teenager, A. Parubijus led the youth organization"Paveldas" - a national liberation movement - and organized pickets.
In 1991, he became one of the founders of the Social-National Party of Ukraine (SNPU), later transformed into the Svoboda party. From 1998 to 2004, he led its paramilitary wing, Patriot of Ukraine.
In 2004, A. Parubijus withdrew from these organizations, distancing himself from radical views.
He actually began his political career in the Lviv regional council. In 2007, A. Parubiy became a people's deputy from the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense bloc.
In 2014, he became one of the founders of the Popular Front party. In the same year, he was elected First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, and on April 14, 2016, Speaker of the Parliament.
Since 2019, A. Parubijus has been a deputy of the European Solidarity Party. He was one of the authors of the language law.
Involved in incidents
In December 2014, A. Parubiy became the victim of an assassination attempt: an unknown person threw a grenade near the Kiev Hotel during his meeting with colleagues.
The then Interior Minister Arsen Avakov stated that the attack was organized by a terrorist organization, and that former Interior Minister Stanislav Shuliak was among the suspects.
Another high-profile scandal arose in 2018, when the Pechersk District Court ordered the Prosecutor General's Office to launch a pre-trial investigation into statements by A. Parubiy that could incite national hatred.
An important figure in Euromaidan
A. Parubiy played an important role in the Euromaidan revolution, becoming one of its leaders. From November 2013, he led the organization of a tent camp on Europe Square in Kyiv and became the commandant of the Maidan.
Under his leadership, the Maidan Self-Defense Force was created, an organized structure that ensured the security of protesters and coordinated actions during clashes with law enforcement agencies. This initiative became the basis for the volunteer battalions that later participated in the fighting in eastern Ukraine.
A. Parubiy actively coordinated the actions of the protesters, organized the defense of the Maidan, and ensured communication between the various groups of participants. His activities were aimed at supporting peaceful protest and repelling violence from law enforcement agencies.
After the victory of the Euromaidan revolution, A. Parubiy continued his political career, holding various positions in the Ukrainian government and parliament. He was awarded various state orders and a letter of honor from the Verkhovna Rada.
The politician was reportedly shot eight times and died before medics could arrive.
The incident was captured on surveillance cameras, and the suspect pretended to be a food delivery man and escaped on an electric bicycle. Ukrainian law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the incident.
