Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025.
She receives the prize for her"tireless work to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people, and for her fight for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy," the Nobel Committee writes.
Machado has been a leading critic of President Nicolás Maduro's regime for several years. Despite being banned from running in elections and facing threats, she has continued to push for democratic reforms and free elections in Venezuela.
Venezuela has long been characterized by economic collapse and authoritarian rule. The award is expected to strengthen the opposition's fight, but is likely to anger Maduro's government.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo on December 10.
Trump tops odds charts
There has been much speculation ahead of the announcement about who would receive the prize. Among the names frequently mentioned was US President Donald Trump, who topped several international odds lists after saying he “deserved” the prize for his diplomatic initiatives.
Trump himself has not yet commented that he will not receive the award.
