247 - Former US Senator and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has harshly criticized the country's current president, Donald Trump, for his outspoken support for Jair Bolsonaro, whom she called “corrupt.”

“You [the American] are about to pay more for meat not only because Trump wants to protect his corrupt friend, but also because the Republicans in Congress decided to give him power over trade policy,” said the Democrat on social media, this Friday (11), when criticizing the unilateral tariffs of the USA against Brazil.

Understand

Last Wednesday (9), US President Donald Trump sent a letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announcing the imposition of a 50% tariff on all Brazilian exports to the North American country, starting August 1. In the document, Trump justifies the measure by citing former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is a defendant in the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for attempted coup d'état.

On the same day, President Lula defended Brazil's sovereignty and said that unilateral tariff increases would be met with the Economic Reciprocity Act. Yesterday (10), Lula stated that the federal government will file an official complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in an attempt to reverse the tariffs.

Experts classify Trump's pressure as political blackmail and say the measure is a reaction to the BRICS. During the bloc's summit, held on Sunday and Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Trump had already threatened countries that align themselves with the BRICS with a 10% tariff.
