Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --

Israel launched airstrikes on Qatar's capital, Doha, on Tuesday (September 9), targeting senior Hamas officials who were gathered to discuss the latest US ceasefire proposal for Gaza.

According to media reports, around 12 Israeli airstrikes hit residential buildings. The Israeli Prime Minister's office indicated that the Zionist state acted alone in its attacks on Doha.

"Today's action against Hamas terrorist leaders was a completely independent Israeli operation," Netanyahu's office said in a social media post, as reported by Al Jazeera, Tuesday (9/9).

On the other hand, in its first official statement after the attack in Doha, Hamas said the Israeli attack was aimed at thwarting the ceasefire and prisoner exchange talks.

The Palestinian militant group confirmed that its top leaders survived a brutal assassination attempt by Israel in Doha.

Meanwhile, six other people were killed in Israeli strikes in Doha, including the son of Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, and one of his aides, as well as a Qatari officer.

"This once again reveals the criminal nature of the occupation and its desire to undermine any chance of reaching an agreement," Hamas said.

Earlier, a senior Hamas source told Al Jazeera that the Palestinian movement's negotiating delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, survived the assassination attempt.

Qatar itself strongly condemned what it described as a"cowardly Israeli attack." It also confirmed that the attack had hit a residential building housing several members of Hamas' political bureau.

"This criminal attack is a blatant violation of all international laws and norms, and poses a serious threat to the security and safety of Qatari citizens and residents in Qatar," Qatar's foreign ministry said in a statement, as reported by Middle East Eye.
