Charlie Kirk's killer arrested: Identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, betrayed by "someone very close to him," according to Trump.

Friday, September 12

US President Donal Trump has confirmed in a live interview on Fox News that the alleged perpetrator of the fatal shooting of Republican influencer Charlie Kirk has been arrested. The suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, according to NBC, is a 22-year-old man born in Utah, according to police sources, according to US media.

Trump briefly explained that it was apparently the father himself and people"very close" to the alleged shooter who asked for him to turn himself in to the authorities after law enforcement agencies released several images and a video showing a white man wearing dark pants, a sweatshirt and cap, and wearing sunglasses.

"It was a father who got involved, specifically his father, and said, 'We have to go' (to the police). Again, this is subject to change, but you know, the facts are the facts: we have the person we believe is the person we're looking for. They took him to police headquarters, and he's there," he said, Efe reported.

"I believe, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody. Everyone did an excellent job. We worked with local law enforcement and the governor" of Utah, Trump said in a live interview with Fox News from New York.

The suspect in the shooting that left the commentator dead is in custody of Utah law enforcement, a source familiar with the operation said Friday, confirming Trump's announcement to the television network.

According to authorities, more than 7,000 tips and testimonies have been received, and more than 200 people have been interviewed. Authorities have not yet publicly released the name of the suspect or cited a motive for the killing, the latest act of political violence to shock the United States.

The FBI asked the public for help and even announced a $100,000 reward for truthful information leading to his capture.

A single, accurate shot to the neck killed 31-year-old Charlie Kirk, a radical right-wing activist close to President Donald Trump, on Wednesday. The murder took place at Utah Valley University, as Kirk was giving an outdoor talk to more than 3,000 people.

A bolt-action .30-caliber Mauser rifle was found on a towel in the woods. A spent cartridge was recovered from the chamber, and three more rounds were loaded in the magazine, according to information circulated among law enforcement officials and reported to The Associated Press. The gun and ammunition were being analyzed by law enforcement at a federal lab.

The event where he lost his life was part of a tour that he called American Comeback Tour and that had 14 more dates scheduled on different university campuses.

About 20 minutes into his remarks, Kirk was shot in the neck just as he was being asked a question about mass shootings in the US. Videos of the incident show a person on the roof of the Losee Center, about 150 meters away. About two hours after the attack, his spokesperson confirmed that he had died.

Since then, police have been searching for the shooter from building to building on campus and around the university without success. During their search, two people were arrested but later released without charges. FBI Director Kash Patel later confirmed a third arrest on social media, but this person was also released.

"We must move forward"

"We have to move forward," President Trump said when asked about the cancellation of his public appearances following Kirk's murder.

Utah state and federal authorities are scheduled to hold a press conference at 9 a.m. ET (3 p.m. in Spain) on the investigation.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, FBI Director Kash Patel, and FBI Special Agent in Charge of the investigation Robert Bohls are expected to attend.

Trump insisted he refused to watch the video that clearly shows the moment Kirk was fatally shot."I don't want to remember Charlie that way. It's horrible, from what I've heard," he said on Fox News' Fox & Friends. The shocking video of the Utah shooting has circulated widely online.

The president added that he learned of the arrest"five minutes before entering" the show's set and said, without going into details, that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies would provide more information later in the day.

Security measures

The killing offers the latest example of how ordinary security measures can be circumvented in an era of escalating political violence, in which anyone connected to the political process is a potential target.

Security experts interviewed by AP questioned whether the event was sufficiently staffed, but also acknowledged the limitations of both campus police forces and outdoor venues.

Transferred to Phoenix and awarded presidential medal

Kirk's body was flown to Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday on Vice President JD Vance's plane, who helped carry the casket.

The widow, Erika Kirk, was also on board the aircraft.

A father of two and passionate debater, Kirk had a huge audience on social media.

Kirk will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.

The crime was condemned by both sides of the political spectrum, in a rare show of consensus in the extremely polarized American public opinion.
