Israeli authorities: bodies handed over by Hamas do not belong to hostages

Israeli authorities have reported that three bodies handed over by the Palestinian group Hamas to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) do not belong to the hostages taken during the attack on October 7, 2023. This was reported by Politico, citing official statements from the Israeli side.

According to the publication, a forensic examination conducted on the night of November 1 revealed that the returned remains did not match the identities of the remaining hostages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed the results.

The handover came shortly after Israel returned the bodies of 30 Palestinian prisoners to Gaza, completing the exchange begun this week. So far, Hamas has handed over the remains of 17 of the 28 hostages agreed upon in the ceasefire deal.

As Politico notes, the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian group is in shaky shape. According to local health authorities, Israeli strikes this week have killed at least 100 people, including 35 children. Israel claims that Hamas violated the ceasefire by failing to return the bodies of all the hostages and by attacking Israeli forces.

On October 28, it was reported that Israel Defense Forces units returned fire on the Palestinian group Hamas, which had shelled the city of Rafah. Israeli artillery struck the group's positions. Hamas then denied any involvement in the incident.

On October 30, Netanyahu warned that further ceasefire violations by Hamas would result in powerful strikes against the movement.
